SUSTAINING OUR SCHOOLS
On Tuesday, November 4, 2025, voters in the Houghton-Portage Township Schools will consider renewing a non-homestead operating millage that is a critical component of our operating budget.
A renewed operating millage WILL NOT increase property taxes for primary residences (homesteads) or most agricultural land. Instead, it would continue to be levied on the owners of businesses, second homes, vacation homes, rental properties, and vacant land.
The maximum rate of operating millage under Michigan law is 18 mills, with 1 mill representing $1 per $1,000 of property value. We are asking for the existing rate of 17.1103 mills to continue for five years. This is among the lowest non-homestead millage rates in the Upper Peninsula.

Operating millages generate revenue for a school district’s operating budget, funding essential day-to-day expenses. These funds account for 12-15% of our budget, as we use them for staff salaries and benefits, along with costs associated with educational programs and extracurricular activities.

A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Our schools are among the best in Michigan, receiving honors that include a National Blue Ribbon designation from the U.S. Department of Education.
U.S. News & World Report ranked our high school No. 33 in the state out of 1,163, while our middle school was No. 38 of 1,988 and our elementary school was No. 76 of 2,633.
The graduation rate of our high school seniors is 99%. These and other attributes are why the Houghton-Portage Township Schools remain a top choice for families in our region.
Maintaining this level of excellence requires continued investment to ensure our students have the learning environment and resources they need to thrive. Our operating millage is a key source of financial support, ensuring we can deliver a transformative education that enables students to fulfill their potential.
